If it fails there as well, then you can conclude that its not the Laptop that's the issue. I would try installing the USB to Serial adapter that you have, and has failed on the Laptop, on the computer that you have success with using its physical Serial Port, providing it has the same OS. Its the 64 bit architecture, not so much Win7 that's the issue. As mentioned in earlier posts, seldom is there an issue when the OS is installed as a 32 bit system, and you state that is what you have with your Laptop.
